Along with "shitan" and "tagayasan", it is considered one of the three precious woods of Karamoku. Due to its hard material, beautiful color and luster, it has been used for Buddhist altars, furniture and building materials, but in recent years, it has become a rare species due to excessive logging in the past and extremely slow growth. In particular, African ebony is listed in Annex II of the Washington Convention because its wood is a source of funding for gangs. The genus name Diospyros means "food of the gods" (dios + grain pyros), and the fruits are delicious and edible, but some of them are toxic.
