It looks like it is made by weaving pieces of wood veneer but is actually made by gluing the pieces together in to a flat pattern. Even when this pattern is generated with the pieces from the same type of wood, there is an effect of an optical illusion that makes the dark and light spots look vice versa. This also can be done by combining many different colored pieces of wood.
