The average age of a cedar tree is more than 300 years old, but the cedars growing on Yakushima Island that are over 1,000 years old are called "Yakusugi". Cutting down of the trees is prohibited, but fallen trees are rarely found in the market. The grain of the wood is very fine and beautiful.
