Along with ebony and Bombay black wood, it is considered one of the "Three Great Chinese Woodcuttings". It was imported via China during the Tang dynasty, and is therefore called "karamoku". It is the general term for several species of wood used as inscriptions in the genus Pterocarpus in the legume family. Indian rosewood and cocobolo are rare and have high market value, and are collectively referred to as "rosewood".
